Bird Bakery

_DSC0133I know I may be the only one, but I’ll admit that I’m not the largest fan of cake. When the cupcake trend picked up speed a few years back, I remained relatively uninterested, though one bakery caught my eye for its {seriously adorable} interior and rave reviews.

On a whim, I swung by Elizabeth Chamber’s eatery – Bird Bakery – nestled in a strip of boutiques on the northern end of Broadway, and left a renewed believer in the cupcake.

_DSC0120Let me mention, Bird has plenty more to offer than just sweet treats. Their menu is extensive, and provides a variety of options for those who want to indulge, but may have dietary restrictions (cue gluten free eats and ‘protein style’ sammies). Every item is made in-house, on-site, day-of, from scratch – a big Y E S in my book.

Craving the classics today, I noshed on Bird’s spin on the tuna salad sandwich, and ordered a lemon bar for desert (which yes, I did eat before lunch..).

_DSC0013A friend settled on a warm hazelnut latte, and mini pecan pie, which we shared as we studied, trying not to become distracted by the other goodies stocked up within Bird’s windowed walls. After an hour or so, we packed up, though I couldn’t help but grab an Elvis cupcake on the way out – my personal fave – to save for later.

_DSC0084A yellow cake base, the Elvis is baked with bananas and chocolate chips, and is topped off with a too-good-to-be-true hand-whipped peanut butter frosting. If you’re a newbie to Bird Bakery, I highly recommend you make the Elvis your first bite. You won’t regret it, and may end up taking home more than one (like I did).

_DSC0144If you’re a local and find yourself cruising close to 410, or are a visitor and are on the hunt for a cute, trendy spot to lunch, be sure to Google Map your way to Bird Bakery. The staff is incredibly welcoming, the shop is filled with trinkets and takeaways, and the food is unparalleled within San Antonio city limits.

_DSC0106Seriously – I go nowhere else for cupcakes, and it doesn’t help that the café hosts amazing little workshops, events, and get-togethers for anyone to join. Plus, who isn’t up for a bit of boutiquing after a fab lunch at Bird’s neighboring stores – a visit is a win-win. Pinkie’s up!
